LUIS POTOSI nació el 20 de septiembre de 1937, en San Antonio de Ibarra, Imbabura, Ecuador, un pueblo que ha sido cuna y solar de grandes artistas.
Luis Potosí, hijo de humildes agricultores de la zona, es un maestro que ha creado la nueva escuela artesanal de San Antonio de Ibarra. Ha elevado airoso el grito de protesta frente a lo tradicional y estereotipado para dar el gran salto de la artesanía al arte en gran escala. Potosí es un artista nato, ya desde niño modelaba en arcilla, más tarde esculpía en piedra, y cuando encontró su elemento auténtico, la madera, logró su plena identificación. Desde entonces, no debemos decir que talla, sino que modela y borda como si la madera fuera un material dúctil y blando del que sus manos extraen las más increíbles manifestaciones estéticas.
Su trabajo ha conquistado un espacio en el ámbito cultural de la sociedad ecuatoriana, aportando al desarrollo y la promoción turística del Ecuador. Luis Potosí ha realizado exposiciones en diferentes ciudades de América y Europa. Ha obtenido premios, trofeos y un merecido reconocimiento de su obra.
Estudió en el Instituto de Artes Plásticas “Daniel Reyes”, donde perfeccionó sus conocimientos de arte y se especializó en la escultura. Sus profesores fueron destacados artistas sucesores de la Escuela Quiteña. Se graduó en 1957 y desde entonces establece su propio taller-escuela, donde ha enseñado a más de un centenar de artesanos. Fue Profesor de Arte en la Universidad de Manabí, Ecuador, ha dictado cursos de arte en escuelas y colegios nacionales. También ha sido Miembro de Jurados Calificadores en Ferias y Exposiciones artísticas.

He studied at the Institute of Fine Arts Daniel Reyes, where he perfected his knowledge of art and majored in sculpture. His teachers were prominent artists of the Quito School successors. He graduated in 1957 and since then, he established his own workshop-school, where he has taught more than a hundred artisans. He was Professor of Art at the University of Manabi, Ecuador. He has taught art in national schools and has also been in jurors Qualifiers Craft Exhibition.
